Rules and Regulations
**Important Notice**
Lafayette has been designated by the Department
of Education as a scanning school. All students enter the building
through the cafeteria and are required to place their book bags
on an x-ray machine and to pass through a metal detection system.
In order to facilitate this process, the following
rules and regulations are currently in place at our school:
- Cell Phones and beepers are strictly prohibited.
- All metal objects (keys, chains, bracelets, watches, gum,
loose change) must be placed in the student's book bag.
- CD/cassette players must also be placed in a student's book
bag.
- Hats go through the x-ray machine.
- Belts must be removed prior to scanning.
- Oversized belt buckles are confiscated.
Any student found in possession of a weapon
of any kind at scanning is subject to suspension from school by
the Superintendent.
As a student at Lafayette High School, you are expected
to follow these regulations:
- You are to carry both your student I.D. card and
your program card everyday. Your I.D. card allows
you to enter the building and the cafeteria. If you come to
school without your I.D. card, you will be escorted to the
Dean's Office and your family will be called.
Repeated cases of leaving your I.D. card at home will require
your parent/guardian to come to school for a conference with
a Dean.
-
Both your I.D. card and program card must be
shown to any staff member upon request. If you lose either
item, report to room cafeteria student center for a replacement.
Students who refuse to surrender their program card and/or
I.D. card to any staff member will face immediate disciplinary
action.
-
You are to follow your program exactly
as it appears. If you feel that a change is needed, you are
to contact your Guidance Counselor by filling out a "Request
for Change of Program" form provided by your
official teacher. Return the form to your official teacher,
who will give it to your Guidance Counselor.
Program changes are delivered to your classes.
If you skip any classes, you may not receive a change. You
must have your "old" teacher sign you out of class
and your "new" teacher sign you in.
Your lunch period is not a free period. You
must report to the cafeteria. You have the option to work
in a school office (for service credit), or report to the
library (where you must show your program card). If lunch
is your last class on your program, you may leave for the
day.
Being in the hall during your lunch period is
CUTTING A CLASS. Any pattern of such cuts
will require a family contact and conference. For health reasons
no food will be permitted to be taken from the cafeteria.
You may not leave and re-enter the building.
If you leave, you are considered gone for the day and will
be marked cutting in all subsequent classes.
-
You are not allowed to wear a walkman/CD player
(including headphones or headgear) in your classes or in the
halls. If you carry a walkman to and from school, or wear
a hat, please place it in your book bag prior to entering
Lafayette High School.
As stated by Board of Education policy (Chancellor's
Circular #30), beepers, cell phones and laser pointers
are NOT permitted. Any student who is found in possession
of a beeper or laser pointers will have it confiscated by
the School Safety Team A laser pointer is considered to be
a weapon and its use will result in a suspension. Once
taken, the beeper or laser pointer will not be returned to
the student. It will be vouched by the Deans Office and will
only be returned to a parent at a scheduled conference.
Remember, there will be no exceptions
to the policy. Be certain to make sure your beeper
or laser pointer stays at home before you leave for school.
-
Smoking is not permitted anywhere
in the building or on school grounds. Violators will be subject
to disciplinary action for breaking a New York City law.
-
Reminder to all students that no balloons are
permitted in the school. They will be confiscated and held
in Room 221 until the end of the day.
-
If you become ill during the school day, you
can go to the infirmary (room B59) with a pass from your subject
teacher. Your family will be contacted if you need to go home.
Reminder, any student under the age of 17 must be picked up
by an adult family member.
Rights and Responsibilities of High
School Students
-
Rights and Responsibilities of High School Students
I. |
Student Government
In each high school there will be an elected and representative
student government with elected offices open to all students. |
II |
Consultative Council
A student-faculty consultative council, as established by
previous City Board of Education resolutions, shall meet with
the principal no less than once a month to discuss mutual
matters of concern. |
III |
School Publications
Official school publications shall reflect the policy and
judgment of the student editors, who will be governed by such
standards of responsible journalism as avoidance of libel,
obscenity, and defamation. |
IV |
Other Rights of Students
Rights shall not be abridged because of race, ethnic background,
color, religious persuasion, age, or sex. Rights are reciprocal.
They must be exercised with care, sensitivity, concern for
others, and responsibility. They are also limited by law. |
V |
Student Responsibilities
Rights entail responsibilities. One of the major goals of
this school is to establish trust based on the human values
of self-respect and the respect of others. No student has
the right to interfere with the education of other students.
If dialogue is interrupted or destroyed, the bonds that hold
us together are broken. It is thus the responsibility of each
student to respect the rights of all who are involved in the
educational process, thus ensuring their own rights as students
and as people.
